Rapidly rising in popularity as sea-fishing centre. Sheltered water. 39 species and many specimens caught to date, incl present Irish record red gurnard and halibut; turbot, bream, coalfish and pollack especially good. Belmullet Sea AC has been active in improving sea fishing in the area, and holds competitions in June, July, Aug. Local venues include Annagh Head: spinning for pollack, coalfish and mackerel from rocky outcrops, float fishing for wrasse, bottom fishing for dogfish and occasional conger; Cross: beach fishing for flounder, dogfish and small turbot. Lugworm may be dug at various nearby localities, including the shore lying west of town. Deep-sea charter boats for shark, reef and bottom fishing from Blacksod Bay.
